word-formation

Overview

Beyond verb-aspect-pairs-b1's aspect-changing prefixes and participles-b1's participle-forming suffixes, Serbian word formation (творба речи) is one general system that builds most of the vocabulary you already know from a much smaller set of roots. This lesson names that system and covers the handful of prefixes and suffixes that do the most work: a negating and a reversing prefix, and suffixes that turn a verb into a noun, an adjective into a noun, a noun into an adjective, or a plain noun into a diminutive or an augmentative.

None of the mechanics are new - you have been meeting derived words since A1 (студент/студенткиња, noun-gender-a1) without a name for the process. What changes at B2 is recognizing the pattern productively: once you know a root and the right affix, you can often build - or at least understand - a word you have never seen before.

Prefixes that build new words

The negating prefix не- attaches to adjectives and nouns - not only verbs - to flip their meaning, and it is always written as one fused word: срећа (happiness) → несрећа (misfortune), способан (capable) → неспособан (incapable), пријатан (pleasant) → непријатан (unpleasant). This is a different не from negation-a1's clause-level particle, which stays its own word because it negates a whole verb, not a single adjective or noun: не радим (I don't work) versus неспособан (incapable), never *не способан.

Раз- (spelled рас- before a voiceless consonant) marks reversal or undoing on a verb - the closest Serbian equivalent to English un-: везати (to tie) → развезати (to untie), паковати (to pack) → распаковати (to unpack), очарати (to enchant) → разочарати (to disappoint, literally to un-enchant). Unlike не-, this prefix attaches almost exclusively to verbs.

Suffixes that build nouns - from verbs and adjectives

Two suffixes turn almost any verb into an abstract noun naming the action itself: -ање after -ати verbs (читати → читање, reading) and -ење after -ити/-ети verbs, jotating the stem exactly the way participles-b1's трпни придев does (видети → виђење, a view/vision, the same д→ђ softening as видети → виђен). Base the noun on whichever aspect fits the meaning, the same choice verb-aspect-pairs-b1 already trained: решити → решење is the completed result (a solution), while its imperfective partner решавати → решавање is the ongoing activity (solving, problem-solving) - same root, two nouns, two meanings.

-ост turns an adjective into an abstract feminine noun naming the quality itself: способан (capable) → способност (capability). It has competitors, though - брз (fast) forms брзина, not *брзост, and леп (beautiful) has both лепота and лепост - so treat each derived noun as its own vocabulary item rather than assuming -ост always applies. Agent nouns naming the person who performs the action pick from a smaller, more predictable set: -лац after an -ати verb's stem (читати → читалац, reader), -ник after many -ити verbs (радити → радник, worker), and -тељ after others (учити → учитељ, teacher).

Suffixes that build adjectives, diminutives and augmentatives

Nouns become adjectives with their own small suffix family: -ски (and its variants -шки/-чки) builds a relational adjective (Београд → београдски, of Belgrade), while -ов/-ев and -ин build a possessive one - -ов/-ев after a masculine noun (Марко → Марков, Marko's), -ин after a feminine noun naming a person or animal (сестра → сестрин, sister's; мачка → мачкин, the cat's). The two possessive endings are complementary, not interchangeable: which one you need depends only on the base noun's own ending.

Diminutives mark smallness and are fully productive in everyday speech: -ић for masculine nouns, often with a linking consonant (град → градић, small town; сто → сточић, small table), -ица for feminine ones (кућа → кућица, small house). Augmentatives mark bigness with -ина (нос → носина, a big nose) - the very same ending -ина that, on an adjective instead of a noun, builds a quality noun like брзина; the base word tells the two jobs apart.

Prefixes that build new words
PrefixBase wordDerived wordMeaning
ne- sreća nesreća misfortune
ne- sposoban nesposoban incapable
raz- vezati razvezati to untie
ras- pakovati raspakovati to unpack
raz- očarati razočarati to disappoint

Examples

To je prava nesreća.
That's a real misfortune.
не- negates the noun срећа directly - one fused word, never separate.
Moram da razvežem cipele pre nego što uđem.
I need to untie my shoes before I go in.
раз- reverses везати (to tie) - the classic undoing prefix.
Raspakovala je kofer čim je stigla kući.
She unpacked her suitcase as soon as she got home.
рас- - the voiceless п in паковати triggers the devoiced spelling of раз-.
Čitanje je najbolji način da naučiš novi jezik.
Reading is the best way to learn a new language.
читање (читати + -ање) - a deverbal noun naming the activity itself.
Konačno smo našli rešenje problema.
We finally found the solution to the problem.
решење - the perfective base gives the completed-result noun; imperfective решавати would give решавање, per verb-aspect-pairs-b1.
Divim se njenoj sposobnosti da ostane mirna.
I admire her ability to stay calm.
способности - a case form of способност (способан + -ост), a deadjectival quality noun.
On radi kao učitelj u osnovnoj školi.
He works as a teacher in an elementary school.
учитељ (учити + -тељ) - an agent noun naming the person who performs the action.
Kupili smo mali stočić za dnevnu sobu.
We bought a small table for the living room.
сточић (сто + diminutive -ић, with a linking ч) - smaller than the plain сто.
Ima ogromnu nosinu, baš kao i njegov otac.
He's got a huge nose, just like his father.
носина (нос + augmentative -ина) - the same ending that builds брзина from брз, doing a completely different job here.

Compared with…

English shares the same broad strategy - prefixes and suffixes build most of the vocabulary, not just root words - but the specific pieces rarely line up with Serbian's. Un- covers both не- and раз-/рас- indiscriminately (unhappy, untie), where Serbian keeps the two apart by what they attach to. English -ing nominalizes a verb the way -ање/-ење does (reading ~ читање), but has no equivalent of Serbian's aspect-based noun pair - решење and решавање both collapse into the single English solution/solving, with no systematic third option. Diminutives are the widest gap: English marks smallness with a separate adjective (a small house), rarely a suffix, where Serbian's -ић/-ица are fully productive and used constantly.

Serbian
Kupili smo mali stočić.
English needs a whole extra adjective (little) to echo what Serbian's single diminutive suffix already carries.
English
We bought a small little table.

Common mistakes

Wrong
On je ne sposoban.
Right
On je nesposoban.
Не- fuses onto the adjective it negates - it is never written as a separate word, unlike the negation-a1 не that precedes a verb.
Wrong
Njegova brzost je impresivna.
Right
Njegova brzina je impresivna.
Брз forms its quality noun with -ина (брзина), not the more general -ост - several competing noun-suffixes exist, so each derived noun has to be learned individually.
Wrong
On je učiteljac u školi.
Right
On je učitelj u školi.
-лац and -тељ are two different agent-noun suffixes; учити takes -тељ (учитељ) - blending the two produces a non-word.
Wrong
Kupili smo mali stolica.
Right
Kupili smo mali stočić.
Столица means chair - an unrelated word that only coincidentally starts the same way. The actual diminutive of сто (table) is сточић.

Tips & exceptions

Tips
  • When a prefix attaches to an adjective or noun (не-), it always fuses into one word; when не negates a whole verb clause (negation-a1) it stays separate - check what is being negated, not just what не precedes.
  • -ање/-ење can nominalize almost any verb on demand - when a noun is missing from your vocabulary, building one this way is usually safer than guessing an unrelated word.
  • Treat -ост, -ина, -ота and the agent-noun suffixes as a learned pairing per word, not a rule to apply blindly - Serbian keeps several competing suffixes alive side by side for the same job.
Exceptions
  • A handful of everyday words look derived but are not: сто (table) and стотина (hundred) share no root at all despite the surface resemblance - do not force every similar-looking pair into these patterns.
  • Some deverbal nouns in -ање/-ење have drifted to name the result or object of an action rather than the action itself, so the productive rule is more reliable for guessing a word's existence than its exact modern meaning.
  • -ин (possessive, сестрин) only attaches to nouns ending in that name a person or animal; it does not compete with -ов/-ев, which covers the rest - the two are complementary, not interchangeable.

Summary

Serbian builds new words from old ones with a small, reusable toolkit: prefixes (не- negates an adjective/noun in one fused word, раз-/рас- reverses a verb's action) and suffixes (-ање/-ење nominalize a verb while tracking its aspect, per verb-aspect-pairs-b1; -ост and its rivals -ина/-ота nominalize an adjective; -лац/-ник/-тељ name the agent; -ски/-ов/-ев/-ин build adjectives from nouns; -ић/-ица mark smallness, -ина marks bigness). Recognizing the pieces lets you understand - and often build - words you have never memorized as whole units.
