Pluskvamperfekat

pluperfect

Overview

Плусквамперфекат (pluperfect) marks a past-before-a-past: one event already finished by the time a second, later past event happened - exactly the job English had done does. Unlike aorist-imperfect-b2's two tenses, this one is common B2 material: expect to recognize it readily and use it in writing or careful speech, though casual conversation often reaches for perfekat plus већ instead.

It's built compound, like перфекат, but doubly so: бити's own perfekat (био сам, била си, било је...) plus the main verb's participle. Literally, био сам радио reads as "I was/have-been having-worked" - one perfekat wrapped around another.

Formation - two participles, one subject

Take бити's own perfekat (ја сам био/била/било, ти си био/била/било, он је био, она је била, оно је било, ми смо били/биле/била, ви сте били/биле/била, они/оне/она су били/биле/била) and add the main verb's participle (радио/радила/радило/радили/радиле/радила for радити). Both participles agree independently with the subject's gender and number - perfekat's single agreement slot, doubled: он је био радио (he had worked), она је била радила (she had worked), ми смо били радили (we had worked).

Negation and word order behave exactly as in ordinary perfekat: сам fuses with не into нисам (never *не сам), and the enclitic auxiliary still cannot open the clause - Био сам радио, never *Сам био радио.

The literary alternative: imperfect + participle

Alongside био сам, you may occasionally meet a more archaic construction built on aorist-imperfect-b2's own imperfect instead of perfekat: бејах радио / беше радио (I/he had worked), same meaning, more literary register - paralleling how that sibling lesson's imperfect itself survives mainly in literature.

Because this variant is rare, this lesson's own drills use only био сам throughout; recognizing бејах/беше + participle when you meet it is enough.

When to use it - and when speech skips it

The classic trigger is two past events whose order needs to be made explicit: Кад сам стигао, он је већ био отишао. (When I arrived, he had already left.) - perfekat сам стигао marks the later reference point, plusquamperfekat је био отишао marks what had already happened by then.

Casual speech often reaches for perfekat plus већ (already) or пре тога (before that) instead, letting the adverb carry the past-before-past meaning the full construction would otherwise mark grammatically. Reserve the complete плусквамперфекат for writing, or for a sequence that genuinely needs to be unambiguous.

Tables

Pluperfect - masculine subject: raditi
PersonSingularPlural
1. ja sam bio radio mi smo bili radili
2. ti si bio radio vi ste bili radili
3. on je bio radio oni su bili radili

Examples

Kad sam stigao, on je već bio otišao.
When I arrived, he had already left.
Core usage: био отишао situates the leaving before стигао, the later reference point.
Ona je bila završila posao pre nego što sam ja došao.
She had finished the job before I arrived.
Feminine subject - both participles agree: била + завршила.
Mi smo bili dogovorili sastanak, ali ga je on otkazao.
We had arranged a meeting, but he cancelled it.
1st plural: смо били + договорили, both plural.
Nisam bio video taj film kad si me pitao za njega.
I hadn't seen that film when you asked me about it.
Negative pluperfect: нисам био + participle, negation fused exactly like plain perfekat.
Bejah radio tamo godinama pre nego što su me otpustili.
I had worked there for years before they fired me.
Literary variant built on imperfect бејах instead of perfekat био сам - same meaning, more archaic register.
Kad je policija stigla, lopov je već bio pobegao.
When the police arrived, the thief had already fled.
3rd singular masculine - a common everyday scenario for this tense.
Već sam bio jeo kad je ona zvala.
I had already eaten when she called.
јео - јести's own irregular participle, same exception class as ићиишао.
Pošto su bili završili školu, otišli su na dugo putovanje.
Having finished school, they went on a long trip.
3rd plural, introduced by пошто - complex-sentences-b1's causal/temporal conjunctions work the same way here.
Da li si već bio jeo kad sam te nazvao?
Had you already eaten when I called you?
A yes/no question built around плусквамперфекат, да ли from questions-a1 unchanged.

Compared with…

English's own had done pluperfect is a near-exact functional match - same past-before-past logic, same typical triggers (кад/пошто-clauses) - a rare case where English transfers more directly than Russian does. The morphology doesn't transfer: English uses one invariant auxiliary had for every subject, while Serbian needs full gender/number agreement on two separate participles at once.

Serbian
Ona je bila završila posao.
English's had never changes; Serbian's била and завршила both agree with the feminine subject.
English
She had finished the job.

Common mistakes

Wrong
On je bila otišao.
Right
On je bio otišao.
The auxiliary participle must agree with the masculine он - била is feminine and does not belong here.
Wrong
Ona je bio radila.
Right
Ona je bila radila.
Both participles must agree with the subject independently - она needs the feminine auxiliary participle била, not the masculine био.
Wrong
Ja nisam ne bio jeo.
Right
Ja nisam bio jeo.
Negation fuses onto the auxiliary as one word, нисам - a second не is never added on top of it.
Wrong
Sam bio radio ceo dan.
Right
Bio sam radio ceo dan.
The enclitic auxiliary сам cannot start a clause - the same second-position rule verb-biti-present-a1 taught for perfekat applies here unchanged.

Tips & exceptions

Tips
  • Learn it as "perfekat of бити, plus the main verb's own perfekat participle" - perfekat, in effect, squared.
  • Both participles must agree with the subject in gender and number - check them as a pair, not just the auxiliary's.
  • In casual speech, већ (already) + plain perfekat often does the same job - save the full construction for writing or a genuinely ambiguous sequence.
Exceptions
  • Irregular participles carry over unchanged from perfekat's own exception list - ићиишао, моћимогао, јестијео - just wrapped in one more layer of био.
  • The literary imperfect-based variant (бејах/беше + participle) is recognition-only, per aorist-imperfect-b2 - never required in production.
  • Aspect choice for the main verb's participle follows the same habitual-vs-completed test as any other tense (verb-aspect-pairs-b1); adding the extra био layer does not change it.

Summary

Плусквамперфекат marks a past-before-a-past: бити's own perfekat (био сам, била си, било је...) plus the main verb's participle, both agreeing independently with the subject's gender and number. Negation and word order follow ordinary perfekat's rules unchanged. A rarer literary variant swaps in aorist-imperfect-b2's imperfect (бејах) for the auxiliary. Casual speech often prefers plain perfekat plus већ over the full construction, reserving плусквамперфекат for writing or a genuinely unambiguous sequence.
