indefinite-pronouns

Overview

Serbian builds four families of indefinite pronoun out of the same two question words, ко (who) and шта (what), plus где (where) and кад(а) (when): a prefix attaches to signal exactly which flavour of un-specified is meant - не- for a real but unnamed someone/something, ни- for no-, и- for any-, and сва- for every-.

This lesson gives the four series, when to reach for each one, the declension they inherit from ко/шта, and one rule that trips up almost everyone at first: a preposition never attaches to the front of a ни-/и- compound - it slides inside it.

Choosing the right series

не- marks a real, existing referent that simply isn't named: „Неко је звонио на врата.“ (Someone rang the doorbell - somebody definitely did, I just don't know who.) сва- marks the opposite extreme, universality: „Свако зна ту причу.“ (Everyone knows that story.)

ни- is negation-a1's own family, and it is never optional there: whenever нико/ништа/нигде/никад appears, the verb must still carry its own не (or fused нисам/нема) too - „Нико не зна одговор.“ и- is the any- series, reserved for genuine questions and conditions where the answer is open: „Да ли је ико видео мог пса?“ (Has anyone seen my dog?), „Ако имаш ишта да кажеш, реци сада.“ (If you have anything to say, say it now.)

The signature rule - a preposition splits the compound

Whenever a ни- or и- pronoun needs a preposition, the preposition is inserted between the prefix and the declined ко/шта-part, never glued to the front of the whole word - see the table below. This is the single most distinctive fact about this pronoun family.

The same split applies to the и- series in questions and conditions: „Да ли причаш ни о чему озбиљно?“ would be wrong as a genuine question (it mixes registers); the natural question form is „Причаш ли о ичему озбиљно?“ - the preposition still sits before the declined ичему, never before an undivided ичему-compound read as one block.

Declension follows ко/шта

Every series inherits the case forms of its base word unchanged, with the prefix simply riding along: кокога/коме/ким gives никониког(а)/никоме/(ни с) ким, and штачега/чему/чиме gives ништаничега/ничему/ничим(е). As with ко itself, the кога-shaped form covers both genitive and accusative, since these pronouns are treated as animate.

This means a negated transitive verb needs the declined, кога-shaped object, not the bare nominative нико: „Не видим никог(а).“ - the same object-form logic accusative-case-a2 already established for animate nouns.

Free choice: било ко / ко год

For whoever/whatever/anyone at all - genuine free choice among many options, not just an unspecified single one - Serbian uses било + the question word, or the question word + год: било ко, било шта next to ко год, шта год - the two constructions are interchangeable. Год generalizes to где год (wherever) and кад год (whenever) as well.

ne- (someone) neko nešto negde nekad
ni- (no one) niko ništa nigde nikad(a)
i- (anyone) iko išta igde ikad(a)
sva- (everyone) svako svašta svuda -

Examples

Neko je zvonio na vrata.
Someone rang the doorbell.
не- series - a real, unnamed referent.
Ako imaš išta da kažeš, reci sada.
If you have anything to say, say it now.
и- series inside a genuine, open condition.
Da li je iko video mog psa?
Has anyone seen my dog?
и- series in a genuine question, not не- .
Niko ne zna odgovor.
Nobody knows the answer.
ни- series - double negation is mandatory, as negation-a1 established.
Ni o kome ne pričam loše.
I don't speak badly about anyone.
Signature rule: the preposition о sits inside the compound, before коме.
Ni sa kim nisam razgovarao danas.
I haven't talked to anyone today.
Same split, instrumental ким after са.
Svako zna tu priču.
Everyone knows that story.
сва- series - universal.
Bilo ko može to da uradi.
Anyone at all can do that.
Free choice - било + question word.

Compared with…

English's four-way distinction - some-/any-/no-/every- - maps conceptually onto Serbian's не-/и-/ни-/сва- reasonably well, which helps memorize which series covers which meaning. But English never splits a compound with a preposition - about no one keeps no one intact - so ни о коме's inserted preposition has no English shape at all and must be learned as a genuinely new mechanic, not just a new set of words.

Serbian
Ni sa kim nisam razgovarao danas.
English keeps anyone (or no one) as one intact word; Serbian inserts the preposition inside the pronoun.
English
I haven't talked to anyone today.

Common mistakes

Wrong
Ne pričam o nikome loše.
Right
Ne pričam ni o kome loše.
Никоме cannot follow a preposition directly - the preposition must split the compound: ни о коме, not о никоме.
Wrong
Nisam razgovarao sa nikim.
Right
Nisam razgovarao ni sa kim.
Same splitting rule with the instrumental ким - the preposition са goes between ни and ким, not in front of the whole compound.
Wrong
Ne vidim niko.
Right
Ne vidim nikog(a).
The object of a negated transitive verb needs the declined, кога-shaped form - никог(а), mirroring accusative-case-a2's animacy rule - not the bare nominative нико.
Wrong
Ne bojim se ništa.
Right
Ne bojim se ničega.
Бојати се inherently governs the genitive, like other genitive-requiring reflexive verbs (сећати се, стидети се, клонити се) - this holds whether or not the clause is negated, so its object must be ничега, the genitive-shaped form, not the invariant-looking ништа.

Tips & exceptions

Tips
  • Fast triage: affirmative some = не-; negative no = ни- (always paired with не/нема); question/condition any = и-; every = сва-.
  • When a preposition is needed, it always slides between the prefix and the ко/шта-part - ни/и + preposition + oblique form - never in front of the whole compound.
  • Год freely attaches to any question word for a whoever/whatever/whenever/wherever free-choice meaning - ко год, шта год, кад год, где год - exactly interchangeable with било + question word.
Exceptions
  • There is no сва-based always (no *свакад in everyday use) - Serbian uses the plain adverb увек instead; the archaic сва-based form свагда survives only in old or literary text.
  • Свашта colloquially carries an ironic, negative shade beyond its literal all sorts of things meaning: „Свашта причаш!“ means „You're talking nonsense!“, not a neutral compliment on variety.

Summary

Four prefixes attach to ко/шта/где/кад(а) to build indefinite pronouns: не- (someone, real but unnamed), ни- (no one, always paired with не per negation-a1), и- (anyone, in questions/conditions), сва- (everyone). Every series declines exactly like ко/шта, and a preposition, whenever needed, always splits the ни-/и- compound instead of attaching to its front: ни о коме, ни са ким, never *о никоме. Било + question word (or question word + год) gives free-choice whoever/whatever.
