locative-case

Overview

The locative answers о коме?/о чему? (about whom?/about what?) and где? (where?) - it is the case of location and topic, and the one case that never appears without a preposition. basic-prepositions-a1 already had you using a fixed ending for location with у/на; that fixed ending was the locative all along, just not named yet.

The good news: for nouns and adjectives, the locative singular is always identical in writing to the dative singular you will meet in dative-case-a2, so once you learn one you effectively know both.

Locative singular and plural

Masculine and neuter nouns take in the locative singular: студент → студенту, село → селу. Feminine nouns take : жена → жени.

Every gender shares the same plural pattern, -ама/-има depending on the noun class - the identical ending used for the dative and instrumental plural too: студентима, женама, селима. Learning this one plural ending covers three cases at once.

Location vs. motion - the same prepositions, two different cases

У and на govern the locative when they describe where something already is, and the accusative when they describe motion toward it: Живим у Београду. (I live in Belgrade - location, locative) versus Идем у Београд. (I'm going to Belgrade - motion, accusative, from accusative-case-a2).

О in its about sense always takes the locative regardless of motion, since discussing a topic is never a physical destination: Причамо о послу. (We're talking about work.) (О also has a separate against/onto sense - ударити о зид, to hit against the wall - that takes the accusative instead; that comes later.)

Examples

Живим у Београду.
I live in Belgrade.
Location: у + locative Београду.
Идем у Београд.
I'm going to Belgrade.
Motion: у + accusative Београд, from accusative-case-a2.
Радим на послу.
I work at work.
Location: на + locative послу.
Причамо о послу.
We're talking about work.
о in its about sense always takes the locative - no motion sense exists for that meaning.
Књига је на столу.
The book is on the table.
на + locative столу: pure location.
Она живи у школи?
Does she live at the school?
Feminine locative школи, ending .
Деца су у селима.
The children are in the villages.
Neuter plural locative селима, same ending as dative/instrumental plural.
При крају разговора.
Near the end of the conversation.
при + locative, a rarer but always-locative preposition.

Compared with…

English marks the location-vs-motion distinction, if at all, by choosing a different preposition or verb ("I live in Belgrade" vs. "I'm going to Belgrade") but never by changing the noun itself - so an English speaker has no case ending to lean on and must rely purely on the preposition-plus-verb meaning.

Serbian
Радим на послу.
English at never changes the noun; Serbian на + locative does.
English
I work at work.

Common mistakes

Wrong
Живим у Београд.
Right
Живим у Београду.
Pure location with у requires the locative Београду, not the accusative-shaped Београд (reserved for motion).
Wrong
Причамо о посао.
Right
Причамо о послу.
о always governs the locative; the nominative посао cannot follow it.
Wrong
Радим на посао.
Right
Радим на послу.
Location with на takes the locative послу; посао (nominative) or посао-as-accusative would wrongly imply motion.
Wrong
Прича на политици.
Right
Прича о политици.
Talking on a topic calques English on; Serbian always uses о (about) + locative for a topic, never на.

Tips & exceptions

Tips
  • For nouns and adjectives, the locative singular is always identical in writing to the dative singular - if you know one, you already know the other.
  • With у and на, ask yourself whether the sentence describes staying somewhere (locative) or heading somewhere (accusative, from accusative-case-a2) before picking the ending.
  • О in its about sense is always locative - you never need to choose a case for a topic. (It also has a separate against sense that takes the accusative, covered later.)
Exceptions
  • This identity is exact in writing for every noun and adjective - the locative and dative singular endings merged completely in standard Serbian spelling. A few monosyllabic masculine nouns do shift pitch accent (not spelling) between the two cases in speech - but since Serbian isn't normally written with accent marks, this has no effect on the written forms taught here.
  • При is much rarer in everyday speech than у/на/о and mostly survives in fixed expressions (при руци - at hand, при крају - near the end).
  • Personal names and some borrowed nouns that don't decline at all (e.g. такси, from a1-transport) keep the same form in every case, including the locative.

Summary

The locative always needs a preposition (у, на, о, при) and marks either static location or a topic - never motion, which switches у/на to the accusative instead (see accusative-case-a2). Locative singular: masculine/neuter (студенту, селу), feminine -nouns (жени). The locative plural (-ама/-има) is shared with the dative and instrumental, so one ending covers three cases at once.
