Overview

nominalization-formal-register-c1 supplied the periphrastic noun phrases formal writing reaches for, and register-shifting-c2 supplied the bureaucratic vocabulary sitting at the formal end of a three-band continuum. Academic and professional Serbian layers three further conventions on top of both: impersonal and passive constructions that remove the author as a visible agent, hedging language that marks a claim as cautious rather than certain, and a fixed set of discourse connectives that organize an argument's structure for the reader.

None of these devices is exotic - a Serbian learner has already met the reflexive passive (passive-voice-b1), modal verbs of obligation (modality-c1), and formal connectives (register-shifting-c2). What is new at C2 is deploying all three together, consistently, across an entire piece of academic or professional writing, rather than as isolated sentences.

Impersonal and passive constructions for objectivity

Academic Serbian systematically prefers removing the author as a visible subject: the reflexive passive „сматра се да...“ (it is considered that...), „закључује се да...“ (it is concluded that...) states a claim without naming who holds it, and the true passive („резултати су анализирани...“, the results were analyzed) does the same for a described action. A first-person ја мислим (I think) reads as a personal opinion rather than a supported claim, exactly the effect academic writing avoids.

The plural of modesty - first-person plural verb forms such as закључујемо (we conclude) - is the one first-person form academic Serbian tolerates, standing in for an impersonal it is concluded without naming an individual author; it survives specifically because it depersonalizes the claim rather than personalizing it.

Hedging and epistemic caution

modality-c1 taught obligation and possibility (треба, ваља, мора, potential mood); academic style redeploys the same modal resources for epistemic caution - marking how confident a claim is rather than what someone should do. Чини се да, вероватно, у извесној мери and може се рећи да (see the table below) all soften a claim's certainty without weakening its content.

Hedging works by appearing exactly once per claim; a casual spoken tag like мислим (I think) stacked on top of an already-hedged sentence does not add caution, it just clashes with the formal hedge already doing that job - the same register-consistency principle register-shifting-c2 established for vocabulary applies here to whole phrases.

Discourse-organizing connectives

An academic or professional argument is organized by a small, fixed set of connectives that signal structure to the reader - the correlative pair с једне стране... с друге стране (on the one hand... on the other hand), штавише (moreover), другим речима (in other words), на основу наведеног (based on the aforementioned, reusing register-shifting-c2's наведени), and a closing на крају/закључно - each with the function the table below sets out.

С једне стране obligates its partner с друге стране to appear later in the same passage - starting the contrast without resolving it leaves the structure visibly unfinished, the connective equivalent of an open parenthesis with no closing one.

Compared with…

English academic writing has moved further from the impersonal passive over the last few decades - many modern style guides now actively recommend active voice and a first-person we, where traditional English scientific prose once leaned on the passive as heavily as Serbian still does. A Serbian learner writing in English may need to relax the impersonal habit; an English speaker writing in Serbian may need to reach for the passive and reflexive constructions more often than their own instincts suggest.

Serbian
Analizom podataka utvrđeno je da postoji značajna razlika.
Serbian nominalizes and stays impersonal («анализом... утврђено је»); contemporary English style would often simply say "we found."
English
Analysis of the data established that a significant difference exists.

Common mistakes

Wrong
Ja mislim da će reforma uspeti.
Right
Smatra se da će reforma uspeti.
A bare personal opinion marker reads as subjective in academic register; the impersonal reflexive construction states the same claim without naming its holder.
Wrong
Rezultati su, verovatno, u redu, mislim.
Right
Rezultati su, verovatno, zadovoljavajući.
Stacking the casual tag мислим onto a sentence already hedged by вероватно does not add caution - it just clashes with the formal hedge already doing that job.
Wrong
S jedne strane troškovi su smanjeni.
Right
S jedne strane, troškovi su smanjeni, a s druge strane, kvalitet je opao.
С једне стране is a correlative connective that obligates its с друге стране partner; leaving it out abandons the contrast the reader was told to expect.
Wrong
Analizirali smo podatke i to je pokazalo interesantne stvari.
Right
Analizom podataka dobijeni su zanimljivi rezultati.
The personal анализирали смо plus the vague то је показало интересантне ствари read as casual narration; nominalizing the action («анализом») and staying impersonal, exactly nominalization-formal-register-c1's mechanism, produces the expected academic register.

Tips & exceptions

Tips
  • Default to the reflexive passive or true passive for claims and findings; reserve the first-person plural ми form only for the rare, deliberate authorial we, and avoid singular ја entirely in formal writing.
  • Hedge each claim once, with one expression from the hedging table - a stacked casual tag on top of a formal hedge undermines the register rather than reinforcing the caution.
  • Treat с једне стране as a promise to the reader: don't open it without following through with с друге стране somewhere in the same passage.
Exceptions
  • Professional genres vary in how strictly they enforce impersonality - a business report to a client may tolerate a first-person ми throughout, while an academic paper in the humanities or sciences expects the reflexive/passive default nearly everywhere.
  • Hedging can be dropped entirely for a claim the author wants to assert with full confidence - the absence of a hedge is itself a meaningful signal, so hedging everything indiscriminately reads as false modesty rather than genuine caution.
  • A very short professional email or memo often skips the discourse connectives this lesson describes altogether - they belong to sustained, multi-paragraph argumentation, not brief correspondence.

Summary

Academic and professional Serbian builds on nominalization-formal-register-c1's periphrastic nouns and register-shifting-c2's bureaucratic vocabulary with three further devices: impersonal/passive constructions (сматра се да, resultati su analizirani) that remove the author as a visible agent, with the first-person-plural ми tolerated as a depersonalizing plural of modesty; hedging expressions (чини се да, вероватно, у извесној мери, може се рећи да) that mark a claim's confidence, each used once per claim; and a fixed set of discourse connectives (с једне стране...с друге стране, штавише, другим речима, на основу наведеног, закључно) that organize an argument's structure, with с једне стране obligating its correlative partner.
