Vuk Karadžić's opponents were not defending chaos. They were defending an entire literary language - slavenosrpski, a hybrid of Church Slavonic, Russian and Serbian vernacular that had its own grammars, its own authors and, for most Serbs who could read at all, absolutely no relationship to how anyone actually spoke.
One man spent forty years arguing that a written language should record the one people actually speak. He lost most of those arguments while he was alive - and then Serbian became one of the easiest languages in Europe to read out loud.
